No Man's Land Tee

Texas gave it up in 1850. To come into the Union as a slave state it had to surrender every acre it held north of the 36°30' line, and what came off the top was a strip about thirty-five miles tall and a hundred and sixty-odd miles wide. Nobody picked it up. Not Kansas, not Colorado, not New Mexico Territory.

For forty years it sat outside every state, every territory, and every court in the country. Cattle outfits grazed it. Outlaws wintered in it. Homesteaders moved in anyway and stood up their own government at Beaver City, because there wasn't another one to appeal to. It got attached to Oklahoma Territory in 1890 for the simple reason that there was nowhere else to put it.
