Cherokee Strip Tee

The Cherokee Outlet was never meant to be lived on. It was a corridor, set aside so the Cherokee Nation would have a road west to the hunting grounds, and for decades the practical use of it was cattle. Outfits leased the grass and ran herds across it.

Then the government bought it. On September 16, 1893, better than a hundred thousand people lined up on the border for eight million acres, and it remains the largest land run in American history. People went down from heat and thirst in the first few hours. Towns that did not exist at sunrise had streets laid out by dark.

This one marks that ground. Cherokee Outlet, 1893.
