Old Greer County Tee

The Red River forks in southwest Oklahoma, and for most of a century nobody could agree which fork the treaty meant. Texas read it one way, claimed the land between the two, organized it as Greer County in 1860, and sold it off to settlers who built farms and towns and paid Texas taxes on every acre.

The United States read it the other way. In 1896 the Supreme Court decided United States v. Texas and handed the whole county to Oklahoma Territory. Several thousand people went to bed in Texas and woke up somewhere else, holding deeds from a state that turned out never to have owned the land. It is Greer, Harmon, Jackson, and part of Beckham County now.
